Stocks were mixed today, as the KBW Banking Index fell 0.91% but the KBW Regional Banking Index rose 0.50%. The broader S&P 500 Index was up 0.29%.

The Bank Index was led by Northern Trust Corporation, Capital One, and State Street Corporation, which were up 4.48%, 4.07%, and 3.30%, respectively. Lagging on the day were M&T Bank, Citigroup, and Huntington Bancshares Incorporated, which had losses of 6.30%, 5.52%, and 5.43%.

Leading the Regional Banking Index were Provident Bankshares Corporation, Frontier Financial Corporation, and Colonial Bancgroup, which were up 60.86%, 30.38%, and 10.86%, respectively. Offsetting these were Corus Bankshares, Hudson City Savings Bank, and Central Pacific Financial Corp., which had losses of 13.56%, 3.94%, and 3.86%.

M&T agreed to purchase Provident Bankshares Corporation in an all stock transaction valued at about $400 million.
