Stocks increased today, partially erasing yesterday’s huge decline, as the KBW Banking Index rose 7.84% and the KBW Regional Banking Index rose 8.60%. The broader S&P 500 Index was up 3.99%.
The Bank Index was led by Citigroup, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo, which were up 11.94%, 11.83%, and 10.59%, respectively. Lagging on the day were PNC Financial Services Group and Zions Bancorporation, which had losses of 2.28%, and 0.19%.
Leading the Regional Banking Index were Colonial Bancgroup, Frontier Financial Corporation, and Sterling Financial Corporation, which were up 54.00%, 25.70%, and 25.06%, respectively. Every member of the Regional Banking Index saw gains on the day.
