Banking stocks declined today, as the KBW Banking Index fell 3.25% and the KBW Regional Banking Index fell 1.55%. The broader S&P 500 Index was down 1.83%.

The Bank Index was driven lower by Zions Bancorporation, KeyCorp, and Wells Fargo, which were down 9.54%, 7.43%, and 6.61%, respectively.

Leading the Regional Banking Index lower were Frontier Financial Corporation, South Financial Group, and Colonial Bancgroup, which were down 17.48%, 9.57%, and 8.98%, respectively. The best performers of the day were Corus Bankshares, Sterling Financial Corporation, and SVB Financial Group, which had gains of 9.80%, 2.92%, and 2.63%.
