Bank Stock Roundup - December 8, 2008
Stocks began the week on a positive note, as the KBW Banking Index rose 5.52% and the KBW Regional Banking Index rose 1.82%. The broader S&P 500 Index was up 3.84%.
The Bank Index was led by Bank of America, Citigroup, and JP Morgan Chase, which were up 17.06%, 9.86%, and 9.42%, respectively. Lagging on the day were M&I, Zions Bancorporation, and Cullen/Frost Bankers, which had losses of 4.17%, 3.06%, and 1.67%.
Leading the Regional Banking Index were Corus Bankshares, Frontier Financial Corporation, and Citizens Republic Bancorp, which were up 18.92%, 14.51%, and 9.25%, respectively. Offsetting these were Colonial Bancgroup, Provident Bankshares Corporation, and First Horizon National Corporation, which had losses of 7.97%, 1.83%, and 1.39%.
