Stocks declined today, as fears of bank nationalization gripped the market.  The KBW Banking Index fell 0.60% and the KBW Regional Banking Index fell 0.28%. The broader S&P 500 Index was down 1.14%.

The Bank Index was led by Citigroup, Fifth Third Bancorp, and Wells Fargo, which were down 22.31%, 14.88%, and 9.16%, respectively. The best performers of the day were Huntington Bancshares Incorporated, KeyCorp, and Capital One, which had gains of 32.04%, 13.25%, and 10.73%.

Leading the Regional Banking Index lower were South Financial Group, Central Pacific Financial Corp., and Sterling Financial Corporation, which were down 14.74%, 12.83%, and 8.63%, respectively. The best performers of the day were Colonial Bancgroup, Wilmington Trust Corporation, and TCF Financial Corporation, which had gains of 10.00%, 4.93%, and 4.67%.
