Bank Stock Roundup - February 23, 2009
Stocks declined today, as the S&P 500 reached its lowest level since 1997. The KBW Banking Index was flat on the day, while the KBW Regional Banking Index fell 2.69%. The broader S&P 500 Index was down 3.47%.
The Bank Index was led by Huntington Bancshares Incorporated, Capital One, and Regions Financial Corporation, which were down 14.71%, 8.79%, and 5.28%, respectively. The best performers of the day were Fifth Third Bancorp, Citigroup, and SunTrust, which had gains of 20.39%, 9.74%, and 7.21%.
Leading the Regional Banking Index lower were Frontier Financial Corporation, UCBH Holdings, and Umpqua Holdings Corporation, which were down 12.95%, 12.50%, and 9.40%, respectively. The best performers of the day were Citizens Republic Bancorp, Sterling Financial Corporation, and Signature Bank, which had gains of 6.67%, 1.57%, and 1.09%.
