Bank stocks outpaced the market today, as the KBW Banking Index rose 4.83% and the KBW Regional Banking Index rose 3.02%. The broader S&P 500 Index fell 1.58%.

The Bank Index was led by Huntington Bancshares Incorporated, SunTrust, and Fifth Third Bancorp, which were up 19.28%, 18.81%, and 18.04%, respectively. Lagging on the day were Citigroup, Northern Trust Corporation, and Bank of New York Mellon, which had losses of 2.38%, 2.24%, and 2.10%.

Leading the Regional Banking Index were Boston Private Financial Holdings, Sterling Financial Corporation, and South Financial Group, which were up 21.99%, 19.38%, and 19.13%, respectively. Offsetting these were First Commonwealth Financial Corporation, Colonial Bancgroup, and UMB Financial Corporation, which had losses of 2.06%, 1.96%, and 0.36%.
