Bank Stock Roundup - January 16, 2009
Banking stocks again underperformed the market, as the KBW Banking Index fell 4.13% and the KBW Regional Banking Index fell 0.45%. The broader S&P 500 Index was up 0.76%.
The Bank Index was led by Bank of America, PNC Financial Services Group, and Zions Bancorporation, which were down 13.70%, 9.87%, and 9.59%, respectively. The best performers of the day were Huntington Bancshares Incorporated, Northern Trust Corporation, and KeyCorp, which had gains of 6.29%, 5.80%, and 1.45%.
Leading the Regional Banking Index lower were Webster Financial Corporation, Citizens Republic Bancorp, and Wintrust Financial Corporation, which were down 16.22%, 5.96%, and 4.99%, respectively. The best performers of the day were First Horizon National Corporation, Provident Financial Services, and Sterling Financial Corporation, which had gains of 18.23%, 4.83%, and 3.15%.
