Stocks increased today, as the KBW Banking Index rose 0.47% and the KBW Regional Banking Index rose 2.54%. The S&P 500 Index was up 2.33%.

The Bank Index was led by Synovus Financial, Fifth Third Bancorp, and U.S. Bank, which were up 6.61%, 5.26%, and 3.93%, respectively. Lagging on the day were Citigroup, Northern Trust Corporation, and Regions Financial Corporation, which had losses of 4.75%, 3.22%, and 2.99%.

Leading the Regional Banking Index were South Financial Group, Citizens Republic Bancorp, and Colonial Bancgroup, which were up 11.67%, 10.30%, and 9.20%, respectively. Offsetting these were Wilmington Trust Corporation, Glacier Bancorp, and Umpqua Holdings Corporation, which had losses of 1.56%, 0.93%, and 0.38%.
