Bank Stock Roundup - March 6, 2009
Stocks were mixed today, as the unemployment rate jumped to 8.1%. The KBW Banking Index fell 1.85% while the KBW Regional Banking Index rose 0.23%. The broader S&P 500 Index was up 0.12%.
The Bank Index was led by Synovus Financial, Wells Fargo, and M&I, which were up 7.29%, 6.03%, and 5.47%, respectively. Lagging on the day were Capital One, PNC Financial Services Group, and Bank of New York Mellon, which had losses of 7.56%, 7.45%, and 7.12%.
Leading the Regional Banking Index were Sterling Financial Corporation, Citizens Republic Bancorp, and Cathay General Bancorp, which were up 13.00%, 10.61%, and 7.73%, respectively. Offsetting these were Boston Private Financial Holdings, Frontier Financial Corporation, and UCBH Holdings, which had losses of 7.96%, 5.56%, and 4.72%.
