Stocks were mixed today, as the KBW Banking Index increased 5.26% while the KBW Regional Banking Index fell 1.32%. The broader S&P 500 Index was down 1.00%.

The Bank Index was led by Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and U.S. Bank, which had gains of 19.43%, 15.80%, and 15.53%. Declining on the day were  Synovus Financial, Commerce Bancshares, and State Street Corporation, which were down 4.15%, 2.54%, and 2.06%, respectively.

Leading the Regional Banking Index lower were East West Bancorp, Boston Private Financial Holdings, and Signature Bank, which were down 12.20%, 7.89%, and 4.47%, respectively. The best performers of the day were Colonial Bancgroup, Webster Financial Corporation, and Central Pacific Financial Corp., which had gains of 13.79%, 6.06%, and 4.77%.
