Bank Stock Roundup - November 18, 2008
Stocks were mixed today, as the S&P 500 Index increased 0.98%. Bank stocks, however, declined overall as the KBW Banking Index fell 0.95% and the KBW Regional Banking Index fell 0.44%.
The Bank Index was led lower by PNC Financial Services Group, Citigroup, and National City, which were down 6.32%, 5.96%, and 4.55%, respectively. The best performers of the day were Regions Financial Corporation, Bank of New York Mellon, and Northern Trust Corporation, which had gains of 5.85%, 4.72%, and 3.34%.
Leading the Regional Banking Index lower were Citizens Republic Bancorp, First Midwest Bancorp, and National Penn Bancshares, which were down 6.55%, 6.33%, and 4.63%, respectively. The best performers of the day were First Horizon National Corporation, Colonial Bancgroup, and South Financial Group, which had gains of 10.41%, 6.41%, and 5.56%.
