Stocks increased today, as the KBW Banking Index rose 0.52% and the KBW Regional Banking Index rose 5.19%. Bank stocks lagged the broader S&P 500 Index, which was up 6.32%.

The Bank Index was led by State Street Corporation, M&I, and Northern Trust Corporation, which were up 10.77%, 10.12%, and 10.00%, respectively. Lagging on the day were Citigroup, KeyCorp, and SunTrust, which had losses of 19.96%, 9.26%, and 8.78%.

Citigroup’s shares slid below $4 amid speculation that it will be forced to sell all or part of the company.  KeyCorp’s shares tumbled after the company slashed its dividend.

Leading the Regional Banking Index were Corus Bankshares, South Financial Group, and Frontier Financial Corporation, which were up 32.58%, 30.88%, and 23.35%, respectively. Offsetting these were East West Bancorp, Wintrust Financial Corporation, and SVB Financial Group, which had losses of 3.89%, 3.08%, and 1.69%.
