Bank stocks increased today, as the KBW Banking Index rose 2.78% and the KBW Regional Banking Index rose 1.34%. The broader S&P 500 Index was up 0.66%.

The Bank Index was led by JP Morgan Chase, PNC Financial Services Group, and KeyCorp, which were up 7.94%, 7.46%, and 7.03%, respectively. Lagging on the day were Bank of New York Mellon, Northern Trust Corporation, and M&I, which had losses of 7.75%, 5.31%, and 1.63%.

Leading the Regional Banking Index were Sterling Financial Corporation, City National Corporation, and Citizens Republic Bancorp, which were up 16.08%, 10.48%, and 9.29%, respectively. Offsetting these were Frontier Financial Corporation, South Financial Group, and Colonial Bancgroup, which had losses of 7.59%, 6.18%, and 6.00%.
